Northborough —Northborough Helping Hands Association, Inc. organized over a hundred Thanksgiving gift baskets at St. Bernadette’s Parish Nov. 22 for families and seniors in need. Helping Hands volunteer Heather Capes said the organization has been holding Thanksgiving drives since its founding in 1920. Donations came from residents, schools, churches, Rotarians, and other organizations throughout Northborough. About 100 families will benefit from the donations. In addition, more than 60 senior citizens will receive Thanksgiving baskets this year.
The need for donations this year is one of the largest in recent memory, the Helping Hands members said. The community responded in kind, they said.
“Every time there’s an uptick in need, the generosity in Northborough doubles,” said Tess Murphy.
The Thanksgiving basket drive was held in a conjunction with a used coat drive. About 300 gently used coats will be distributed in Northborough and Marlborough.
Helping Hands is now in the process of collecting holiday gifts for Northborough families through giving tree programs in town. Those who wish to still help out can mail a tax-deductible donation to Helping Hands, P.O. Box 383, Northborough, MA 01532.
