Northborough – Community volunteers and members of the Northboro Junior Woman’s Club planted an unusual garden March 30 at Town Hall. A thousand pinwheels were plunked into the soil, each one representing a donation to Massachusetts Citizens for Children. As a whole, the garden of spinning, flashing blue “Pinwheels For Prevention” will bring awareness to National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.
According to Lori Hagen, treasurer or the Northborough Junior Woman’s Club, which spearheaded the fundraiser, almost $1,000 was raised for Citizens for Children, exceeding last’s year’s amount by about $250.
“We did well this year,” Hagen said. “It’s nice to see the community come together around an issue like this.”
Hagen described the significance of the “eye catching” pinwheels. “A pinwheel is bright and shining and a symbol of hope – the bright, shiny futures we’d like our children to have.”
Pinwheels will be displayed at four other sites in Northborough, including Trinity Church, and at one site in Marlborough.
Since 2008, more than 2.3 million Pinwheels For Prevention have been distributed across the U.S. through Prevent Child Abuse America, with which Massachusetts Citizens for Children has partnered.
The mission of the Northboro Junior Woman’s Club is to enhance the quality of life in the community through volunteer efforts, according to the club’s website.
