Northborough – It’s officially fall – it’s getting darker earlier, the nights are cooler, and scarecrows line the fence at Assabet Park facing South Street/Route 135.
The Northborough Recreation Department held its 12th annual Build-a-Scarecrow day Sept. 29. The weather was perfect as part of the park was transformed into the center of creativity. Kids stuffed straw into shirts and were focused on each detail to make their scarecrow unique.
For a small registration fee, families were provided with materials to mount the scarecrow, twine, and materials for the face. Families brought the clothing and accessories for their own scarecrow.
Recreation Director Allie Lane said 25 families participated this year and it was a pretty even mix of first timer and repeat scarecrow artists.
Every scarecrow has its own theme. Some designs are familiar, like Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a Boston Bruins player. Other designs included very detailed accessories, such as a homemade pair of binoculars.
The scarecrows will be showcased throughout the month of October.
