Northborough – Dr. Mikhail Novikov’s spark for medicine was ignited in high school when he volunteered in the Emergency Department of a local hospital in Russia where he grew up. His education, experience and background led him to his current position as Medical Director of his new Wellness and Skin Care office in Northborough, which opened in November of 2018. It is located at 318 Main St., Suite 165.
Novikov along with three other providers, including two Physician Assistants, provide complete dermatologic care, wound care, physical exams and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries all in one location.
He wants people to think of his office as first responders.
The care the providers offer and the ease of making an appointment without a long wait not only brings convenience to the patient but a cost savings, as it often prevents the need for a more expensive emergency room or urgent care visit.
“We are able to provide care to the majority of patients in the office setting,” Novikov said. “If a solution cannot be found or the patient needs more sophisticated treatment, they will be referred to a specialist.”
One service that is offered is a full body skin exam, which is advised for people over 40.
“We can look at the skin and identify precancerous lesions, which can be treated to prevent them from becoming skin cancer,” Novikov said.
The practice is also committed to wound care, often providing services directly to patients staying at long term care and nursing home facilities.
“We are proud of the data on our healing rates,” he said. “Our average is 35 days versus 66 days.”
Novikov also utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach and addresses a patient as a whole to also consider aspects that might have led to the condition, including diet, type of bed, and overall living environment. This nonstandard approach leads to better outcomes.
“Quality is our main concern,” he said. “It’s our priority.”
It is also important to Novikov that the patient knows him and his staff by name and to not lose the feel of the one-on-one, patient-doctor relationship.
The office treats people of all ages, including adolescents with acne and skin problems.
He does remind everyone the importance of using sunscreen.
“The younger population won’t see skin changes for another 10-20 years,” said Novikov. “Sun damage will exhibit later and not be present right away.”
Novikov also sees patients in Marlborough at the Charles River Medical Associates location on 246 Maple St. He looks forward to seeing more patients, noting that both locations are convenient especially for those with limited transportation.
“The biggest compliment is patient referrals,” he said.
